I don't know if this idea will pan out, but it would be fun to see a Kakuro variant simply by changing the base from ten to eight, nine, eleven or twelve. Many of the patterns we've come to recognized would have to be rethought. The same concepts would apply, but the "scanning" stage would require quite a bit more care. Reducing the base should make the puzzles easier after the initial shock... while increasing it should increase the options. The problem might be with designing them to be solvable.
